For The Sugar Cookies
Ingredients:
2 cups All Purpose Flour
¾ cups Butter
¾ cups White Sugar
1 Egg
¼ tsp. Salt
1 tsp. Baking Powder
½ tsp. Baking Soda
1 tsp. Vanilla extract or flavoring of your choice
Directions:
- Preheat your oven to 350 ̊F
- In a separate bowl sift together your dry ingredients except the sugar. Set this aside.
- In a medium sized mixing bowl with a mixer, cream butter until it is light and fluffy. You will know that your butter is light and fluffy once it becomes light yellow in color.
- Add your white sugar to the butter mixture. Mix this together thoroughly. Be sure to scrape the sides of your mixing bowl so that you get everything on the sides as well.
- Add the egg and vanilla to your butter and sugar mixture and mix thoroughly.
- Add your dry ingredients to the mixture gradually. Again, be sure that you scrape your bowl’s sides so that everything gets mixed properly. You should end up with a dough-like mixture.
- Roll out your dough mixture on a clean table top. You will want to have it rolled out uniformly at about ¼ inch thickness so that it is neither too thick nor too thin.
- Cut out molds with a cookie cutter of your choice and put on a cookie sheet.
- Bake this in your oven for about 10-15 minutes or until cookies are a light brown color on the edges.
Note: Ovens often have different temperature settings even with the standard heat settings, so be sure that you monitor your first batch of cookies carefully. This way you will know the best time to bake your cookies.
For The Frosting
Ingredients:
1 cup Powdered Sugar
3 tsp. Milk
½ tsp. Vanilla or flavoring of choice
Directions:
- Mix the first three ingredients together in a bowl.
- Divide into separate bowls and add a food coloring of your choice to each bowl. Mix thoroughly.
- Dip cooled sugar cookies into this or spread frosting on cookie using a butter knife or spatula.
Tips:
- Go beyond sugar frosting! You can also add sprinkles, nuts, dried fruits, edible glitter, edible pearls and anything that you can use for decorating you cookies.
- Make sure that your cookies have been thoroughly cooled before frosting them so that your frosting does not melt when you put it on.
- For a unique kind of treat, insert a Popsicle stick into your sugar cookie before baking. This will give you sugar cookie popsicles. Cover these in clear plastic and tie with a bow and you’re good to go.
- Instead of using sugar frosting, you can use colored glaze on your sugar cookies. What you need to do is beat an egg yolk and add some food coloring to it. You can then use this to paint over your cookie dough and your cookie will have a glaze coating after baking.
- For a different way to decorate your sugar cookies, try drizzling your frosting or some chocolate syrup over it. You can put the frosting or chocolate in an easy squeeze dispenser for better control.
