A theme based on a country of origin is one of the best ways you can celebrate your special day with a unique wedding theme. Not only do you get to relay your personal history and culture onto your guests, but the traditional ceremony and games are usually enjoyed by most guests. It's a fun experience, and at the same time a learning experience.
These unique wedding themes are not exclusive to those who are of a particular descent, however. Even people who have no specific ties to a certain culture, and are simply fascinated by it can have a wedding following a certain heritage theme.
Mexican Theme
Like a German wedding, a Mexican wedding is one big party, again with a lot of tradition going into the ceremony. Most couples can marry in a mission-style church (plenty of these in California and New Mexico) in order to give it that Mexican feel. During the ceremony, the bride and groom are lassoed together in order to show that they are now tied together. The groom also gives the bride thirteen gold coins in a small pouch, which symbolizes the groom putting his trust in the bride. The bride's dress is usually layered with lace, while the bridesmaids wear traditional Mexican dresses with ruffled tops and skirts. The men wear suits with ruffled shirts as well.
One unique aspect of a Mexican wedding is that the reception is often held in the garden of the bride's home. This garden is decorated in striking colors, usually turquoise, magenta, and orange, with fiesta flags strung from one end to the next and colorful tablecloths on each of the tables. The food served is Mexican, of course, ranging from an array of enchiladas, burritos, taco salads, roasted pork called carnitas, tamales, tortilla with salsa or guacamole, and a bean dish. The cake is usually a rum soaked fruit cake or a tres leches cake with marzipan trimmings.
For a unique wedding theme giveaway, hand out sombreros to each of your guests, these are usually very cheap and easy to obtain in bulk. Finally, hire a single acoustic guitar player for the bride and groom's first dance. The first dance is also the time when guests pin money to the clothes of the bride and groom to wish them luck on their marriage. The rest of the wedding can have mariachi music!
